Michel Rolland: Master of Terroir, Mentor to the World
The wine world has just lost one of its most influential voices. Michel Rolland, who passed away aged 78, was a visionary whose hallmarks are found on wines from Bordeaux to Mendoza, from Chile’s valleys to the sunlit landscapes of Uruguay, and across more than 150 estates on five continents. Few figures have shaped the global wine stage as profoundly, or indeed as enduringly, as he did.
Rolland’s roots were firmly in Bordeaux, where his early career saw him transform some of the region’s most prestigious estates into models of elegance and precision. From the Médoc to Saint-Émilion, he guided producers in marrying traditional terroir expression with modern stylistic finesse, creating wines that combined structure, ripeness, and approachability. He owned and consulted for numerous estates, built one of Bordeaux’s most respected oenology laboratories in Libourne, and introduced viticultural practices, from canopy management to selective harvesting, that became benchmarks for quality. His work redefined the potential of Bordeaux for a new generation of winemakers and collectors, earning him both admiration and occasional debate, but always respect for his vision and artistry.
Beyond Bordeaux, Rolland carried his philosophy across oceans. As the original “flying winemaker,” he brought Bordeaux techniques and his instinctive sense of balance to South America, North America, Africa, and beyond. He championed the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza, helping Malbec achieve global acclaim, and worked with Chilean and Uruguayan producers to refine their signature varietals. He encouraged a new wave of winemakers to embrace precision, harmony, and elegance, while never losing sight of the individuality of each terroir. He elevated regional wines to international prominence, harmonising the elegance of the Old World with the boldness of the New.
Without doubt Michel Rolland was fearless in vision, generous in guidance, and unrelenting in his pursuit of quality supremacy. At times polarising, he nonetheless transformed how the world understands wine: teaching us to listen to the vineyard, respect the craft, and daring us to imagine what the wine could become when knowledge, instinct, and artistry converge.
For Andes Wines, his legacy lives on in every bottle, capturing precision, the authentic expression of terroir, and a dialogue that spans the world of wine. Today we raise a glass to Michel Rolland: a master of Bordeaux, a champion of Latin American wines, and a true luminary whose vision, ingenuity, and enduring influence will inspire generations to come.
