Four-day Food and Wine Festival kicks off Thursday: For decades the Miss America pageant was one of the key events that drew tourists to Atlantic City. And when the annual beauty contest moved out of town in 2005, a modest part of the Jersey Shore city's revenue left as well. BY JOHN HOLL |

THREE CHEERS FOR CANNED BEERS! / BY JOHN HOLL FOR ANDESWINES.COM

Despite a bad reputation, there are some excellent choices available. As summer hits its stride, one of the more rewarding adult privileges is a cold beer on a hot day. However, for those who prefer suds of the craft or micro brewed variety, options for the golf courses, pools, and other public outdoor venues – where glass bottles are not allowed and a keg is impractical – are limited. The entrée was roasted organic chicken and fennel spiced Italian sausage with scarlet runner beans and collard greens. The meal was topped with a chocolate pot de crème with coffee foam and chocolate pearls. By JOHN HOLL for AndesWines.com |

AN ANALYSIS ON CHILEAN WINE INDUSTRY FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF A US MARKETER
The wines of Chile have long been well represented in the US and other countries, although primarily positioned as a well priced, lower quality alternative. Recent movements in the Chilean wine industry have attempted to upscale the image and quality of the wines, with some moderate success. While the quality of the new top tier wines is well above the historic offerings from Chile there is some question about their viability on the world stage in lieu of expectations of the well educated international consumer. Do the wines really compete on a quality level with similarly positioned wines from other countries? By Stephen Reiss - Wine Educator in Chile |

GOOD BY THAILAND, HELLO CHILE
Chile is the next stop on the year long, around the world, Wine Quality Crusade. We will be arriving in time to celebrate the New Year, and will be staying in South America until their harvest gets underway. We have been exploring the lesser known parts of the world to uncover their hidden wine gems, and what a trip a has been so far. We are just over the halfway point and have visited seven countries, and discovered a veritable treasure trove of wines that are all but unheard of in the US. Chile is not a secret you may point out. Certainly a look at the shelves in any wine outlet will uncover any number of selections. This is as true in Thailand as it is in North America. Take another look at those wines though. How many are entry priced, ready now quaffers? |

CALIFORNIA WINE INDUSTRY STATISTICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Wine is California’s most valuable finished agricultural product with more than $45.4 billion, counting revenues to the wine industry and allied industries, direct, indirect, and induced economic benefits. California wineries shipped 532 million gallons to the U.S. and abroad in 2005. U.S. consumers purchased 441 million gallons of the state’s shipments. These shipments from California accounted for 63 percent of the total 703 million gallons--both foreign and American—consumed in the U.S., or roughly two out of every three bottles sold in the country. California winery shipments to the U.S. comprise roughly $16.5 billion of the $26 billion estimated retail value of all wine sold in the U.S. in 2005. |

THE QUALITY OR THE CRITTER? AUSTRALIAN WINES AND THE AMERICAN PALATE
American wine writer Dan Berger gave this year’s Wine Press Club of New South Wales Annual Lecture (below) in Sydney on Wednesday entitled “The Quality or the Critter? Australian Wines and the American Palate”. One year on from James Halliday’s lecture, he made several points that were almost as controversial as Halliday’s, among them that Australia actually has a shortage of the right grapes and that wine consumers should be given more information about the pH of individual wines. As one who has addressed the Wine Press Club of NSW myself under the mistaken impression that its members are members of the press, I can assure you that the speech will have been heard by the great and good throughout the Australian wine industry. |

WOMEN AND WINES
Men have always monopolized everything that has to do in matter of wines, and for decade’s women have been at the bottom of the barrel in this world. But now is the time for girls to reach for parity in a place where machos had been the main characters. Women are often credited for being more acute tasters and that they look at wines with different eyes than men. Sometimes men can see a bottle of wine like a trophy, something to acquire and show off, but women give more importance to what’s inside the bottle, they search for good wine. And that’s why a survey conducted by the Wine Market Council in St. Helena in 2005, showed that 56 percent of the U.S. wine drinkers, are females. |
